Socials glossary

Mechanization: to equip (a factory, industry, etc) with machinery.


Mining: the act, process, or industry of extracting coal, ores, etc, from the earth.

Mineral: any of a class of naturally occurring solid inorganic substances with a characteristic crystalline form and a homogeneous chemical composition.

Fossil fuels: any naturally occurring carbon or hydrocarbon fuel, such as coal, petroleum, peat, and natural gas, formed by the decomposition of prehistoric organisms.

Industry: organized economic activity concerned with manufacture, extraction and processing of raw materials, or construction.

Irrigated farming: Farming that is suppling with water by means of artificial canals, ditches, etc, esp to promote the growth of food crops.

Energy: the capacity of a body or system to do work.

Biomass: the total number of living organisms in a given area, expressed in terms of living or dry weight per unit area.

Management: the members of the executive or administration of an organization or business.

Workforce: the total number of workers employed by a company on a specific job, project, etc.

Wind turbine: a device that converts kinetic energy from the wind into mechanical energy to drive machinery or generate electricity.

Solar panel: a flat section that is relating to the sun.

Renewable energy: Energy sources that are inexhaustible.

Non-renewable energy: Energy sources that are limited.

Traditional energy: Refers to the energy sources that are most commonly used.

Alternative energy: a form of energy derived from a natural source.

Dam: a barrier of concrete, earth, etc, built across a river to create a body of water for a hydroelectric power station, domestic water supply, etc.

Guild: a group of people that shared the same job and had its own hierarchy.

Heavy industry: industry that makes goods that cannot be immediately consumed.

Light industry: industry that produces goods that are ready for consumption.

Cutting-edge industries: industry that employs advanced technology.

Craftsperson: person who makes products using basic tools and manual labour.
